Plan for the TV you own and the one you might buy

For a Kingston media wall, send the TV model as well as its advertised screen size. A diagonal measurement tells us very little about the casing, the ports behind it or the bracket it needs. Those details affect a fitted opening and how you will reach the connections later.

We also ask whether this is probably the largest television you want. Some clients buy the larger screen before we build; others keep their current one. That choice changes how much space to leave around it.

01

Check the opening after allowing for the finish

Check that the dimensions on the drawing describe the finished TV opening. Boarding and finishes reduce the space within the frame, so a television that appears to fit during construction can become too tight. We allow for those layers when setting out the recess.

Use the full casing dimensions and the manufacturer's clearances, including room to fit and remove the screen. If you are ordering a replacement, compare its model specification with the finished opening before buying it. The same advertised screen size does not guarantee the same outer dimensions.

02

An upgrade allowance still has limits

A replacement needs to fit the opening and work with the mounting and connections. In the completed installation described in our TV-upgrade article, the owner wanted a recess with room for a modest size increase. We left a visible allowance around the TV to help with the first part.

A future model still needs the hardware and cable checks. The extra space was never a promise that any larger television would work. If you cannot yet say how large you want to go, our usual advice is to mount in front of panelling and leave room between the neighbouring shelves.

03

Matching bolt holes are only one bracket check

Check the replacement TV against the bracket instructions before assuming the old bracket will do. The mounting-hole pattern, often called VESA, is one part. The weight rating and the screws required for the new model also matter, along with the support behind the bracket.

A pull-forward bracket needs enough movement to let you reach and remove the screen. Nearby shelves must not block it. Keep the television and bracket model details with your installation information; they make those checks easier when the time comes to change the TV.

04

Leave a route back to the connections

A replacement TV might put its HDMI ports on the opposite side. Before fitting it, check that the cables reach the new sockets with room for the bracket to move. We plan accessible routes so a cable can be replaced instead of relying on one length concealed permanently inside the wall.

Our access panel can sit behind the TV or within the shelving, depending on the layout. We agree which side you can reach and keep the sockets and lighting power supply accessible. At handover, ask us to show you how to get to them and how the screen pulls forward.

05

Give equipment the depth it needs

Send the equipment model rather than a description such as games console. Its casing may fit a compartment while the plugs, specified ventilation space or access to the disc slot do not. We check those details before setting the internal dimensions.

If you intend to change that equipment soon, include the proposed model too. A deeper base cabinet can provide usable space without bringing the upper shelving forward by the same amount. Check the clear internal depth on the drawing; the overall depth includes the cabinet construction and finish.

A shallower layout still needs suitable support, concealed connections and finishing. We quote the complete specification rather than pricing by depth alone.

The final price depends on the surveyed dimensions and agreed specification. Your written quotation sets out the work included before we begin.

Discuss your guide price

Useful things to send us

  • Send a front and side photograph, with the wall width and available projection.
  • List the TV and other equipment models, including any planned replacement.
  • Tell us what needs to fit inside the cupboards and where you would like access.

Approximate measurements are enough for the first conversation. We take the detailed measurements at the site survey.

    A guide-price call

Share a photo, the approximate wall width and your TV size. Daniel will discuss your ideas and give you a guide price before you commit to a site visit.

  2. 02

    Survey and design

Once you are comfortable with the guide price, Luca measures the space. We work through the layout, finishes, equipment and access, then agree the design and fixed quotation.

  3. 03

    The complete installation

Our in-house team coordinates the joinery, agreed electrical work, lighting and finishing. At handover, we show you how to use the lighting and reach the concealed access panels.

Questions about media walls in Kingston upon Thames

Will a new TV of the same advertised size fit?

Not necessarily. Check its complete width, height and depth against the finished opening, along with the required clearances. The screen diagonal does not describe the casing or the position of the mounting holes.

How much extra space should a recess have?

We set that from the specific TV, the bracket and any agreed future upgrade. A large allowance stays visible around the current screen. If you do not know how much bigger you may go, mounting in front of panelling gives more flexibility.

Could a larger television cover an existing recess?

Sometimes, if a suitable bracket can bring it forward and the screen covers the opening. The support, cable reach and clearances need checking. The gap behind may still show from the side.

Can I reach the HDMI ports after fitting?

We plan access behind the screen and show you how it works. A compatible pull-forward bracket gives room to reach the connections. A future TV should be checked for port position and cable reach as well as size.

Does concealed lighting mean opening the finished wall for a repair?

Our halo strips sit behind the television, with the power supply in an accessible position. Replacing those parts should not require dismantling the joinery. Fault-finding or work on fixed mains wiring may need an electrician.

Can a media wall be shallow and have no fire?

Yes. Where the wall is suitable, panelling with the TV in front and a separate base unit can avoid a deep full-width structure. The equipment, fixings and cable routes still determine the final dimensions.
